EXT 3RD WORLD CITY ROAD DAY
Range Rover is traveling amid bicycle traffic on a dirt road.
INT. RANGE ROVER 3RD WORLD CITY ROAD - CONTINUOUS
TIM STAHLWORTH(22) sits comfortably in the back seat
of the chauffeured SUV. TIM stares out the tinted window
at the rain coming down in sheets.
PARK(63) TIM'S driver is at the wheel.
PARK
I think the rain stop soon, probably
end tonight or next month.
TIM
Tonight, or next month.
(a beat)
A little vague, don't you think?
Good news though, thought I was
living in Seattle.
PARK
No, we in Burma Mr. TIM.
TIM
How come nobody calls this country by
it's real name?
PARK
Real name Burma.
TIM
OK, by it's official name. Myanmar.
(a beat)
PARK
Country Burma.
PARK begins a deceleration.
EXT. 3RD WORLD CITY ROAD CONTINUOUS
PARK'S POV: Range Rover approaching a traffic light
of numerically descending red numbers. As the numbers
reach zero, the light turns into green numbers, that
start to count down from 35. The car moves through the
intersection.
ANGLE ON: Range Rover through streets. Although it is
raining, there are many PEDESTRIANS as well as BICYCLE
TRAFFIC. The PEOPLE seem accustomed to the rain, going
about their morning routine.
Range Rover turns left through a large open gate.
EXT. DRIVEWAY ENTRANCE - INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
ESTABLISHING SHOT - CONTINUOUS
PARK, eases the SUV into a visitors parking
spot at the International School.
PARK jumps out of the SUV, umbrella in hand. TIM already
out of the SUV doesn't wait for assistance, smiling to
PARK, TIM quickly makes his way to the steps leading up
to the school entrance.
PARK
(yelling to TIM)
3:30 Mr. Tim?
TIM
Yes Park, thank you, have a good day.
ANGLE ON: PARK slight tilt to his head, perplexed
smile on his face, with a slug of his shoulders
PARK escapes the rain back in the drivers seat.
CAMERA PULLS BACK: to reveal CHILDREN and ADULTS clambering
into the school from all directions, their faces
anonymously lost in the rain.
INT. INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL HALLWAY MORNING
TIM wades through STUDENTS on their way to class.
Now we see the mixed faces of the STUDENTS and some
TEACHERS. Mostly occidental faces, some give TIM
a smile, or a brief nod, most are caught up in
the chaos of the morning rush.
TIM passes CHARLIE and STEVE, both due to be in his class.
CHARLIE
(surprised)
Morning Mr. Stallhworth.
TIM
(nods)
Morning Charlie,
(half beat)
Steve, I saw you now, so I better see
you in my class later.
CHARLIE
(mischievously)
Are you sure you saw us?
Maybe we are someone else.
TIM
I'll see you in class.
Rounding several corners, dodging STUDENTS hurrying
to class, TIM finds the door to the teachers lounge.
INT. INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - TEACHERS LOUNGE - DAY
Several TEACHERS are drinking coffee, looking at papers.
The TEACHERS of the lounge look up as TIM, coming from
the pandemonium of the outside hallway, disturbing the
harmony of the lounge.
SAM KINSLEY, a teacher roughly the same age as TIM,
is on his way out to the hallway, and acknowledges TIM
with a nod, as TIM enters the room.
The rest of TIM'S peers seem absorbed in a brief moment
of relaxation, before their classes begin.
LUCY KUNTZE, a good looking, petite English literature
teacher from Mississippi, throws TIM an alluring
smile. LUCY is in her early 30's but looks younger.
RAPHAEL DUVALLE early 50's, looks up as well.
RAPHAEL
Hey Tim, good morning.
TIM
Good Morning Raphael.
RAPHAEL
You're looking sharp this morning.
RAPHAEL(CONT.D)
How did you avoid getting wet?
TIM
You know how it is when you're from
New York.
RAPHAEL
No.
(a beat)
I don't really know.
What does that mean?
TIM goes to a line of lockers and transfers papers to
and from his backpack.
SARA ROTHSTEIN, who teaches foreign language
chimes in.
SARA
I think what he means is, you're
fast in New York, so fast you
can dodge raindrops.
LUCY
Is that what it is Tim?
That's pretty impressive.
TIM
(now on his way out the door)
I don't like to brag But
LUCY
(coming to the door)
Hey Tim, I wanted to ask you
something. Are you on your way
to class?
TIM
(nods)
Yeah, gotta teach them something
today I guess.
LUCY
I want to ask you something,
lets walk and talk.
RAPHAEL and SARA give TIM and LUCY sly and suspicious
smiles.
LUCY
(to RAPHAEL and SALLY)
You guys hush.
RAPHAEL
(looking coy along with SALLY)
Did we say anything?
ANGLE ON: CLOCK 8:51.
INT. INT'L SCHOOL HALLWAY MORNING
LUCY and TIM walk down the open aired hallway as
CHILDREN quicken their paces to class.
LUCY
I had a really great time last night.
TIM
So did I.
LUCY
We are going to have to be discreet
if we want to keep this relationship
up. I don't want to be embarrassed by
those bozos.
TIM
I agree, I think they're on to us, maybe.
(a beat)
Does that mean no more meetings in the
Teacher's lounge after school?
LUCY
Not necessarily.
TIM
Do you want to meet at 2:30?
LUCY
(coy)
Yes,
(a beat)
and I wanted to invite you to the UN
ambassadors party tomorrow night.
TIM
I don't know how much fun that will be.
LUCY
(flirting)
We can make it as fun as we want.
(half beat)
And I'll be there.
TIM
I suppose that's true.
LUCY
I'll see you later.
ANGLE ON: CLOCK 8:59
INT. INT'L SCHOOOL - TIM'S 1ST PERIOD MATH CLASS
TIM walks through the door to his class.
The STUDENTS take their seats.
TIM
Good morning class.
STUDENTS
Good morning Mr. Stallworth.
CUT TO:
INT. OPEN AIRED TEA SHACK BURMESE STREET MORNING
PARK is engaged in conversation with two shady
BURMESE RUFFIANS. BORLA and his business associate
PRIFER. BORLA and PRIFER have worked together for a
number of years. Although obviously seedy low lifes,
they have a comedic Laurel and Hardy quality. BORLA
and PRIFER are debating.
CONVERSATION in Burmese with English subtitles.
PRIFER
They must drink tea. It is everywhere.
BORLA
(sipping his tea)
No, I'm sure of it, no tea, only coffee.
PRIFER
What about the Chinese living in the US?
Did they just suddenly give up tea?
BORLA
Depends on how old, if they are young,
then just coffee.
PRIFER
(shakes his head at BORLA;
to Park changing the topic)
This Japanese has ties with a big
gangster family in his country. If
we can get the location of the crystal
he said he'd pay big money.
PARK
I think Mr. America has seen it but
I'm not sure. I'll ask him again this
afternoon somehow. Tell your contact
we'll have an answer soon.
BORLA
And find out if they drink tea over there.
INT. INT'L SCHOOL HALLWAY DAY
TIM steps out of his classroom. TIM Looks right, then
left, he sees LUCY approaching from down an empty hallway.
LUCY
Hi, how was your day?
TIM
Not to bad for a Friday most
everyone behaved themselves,
even got an apple.
TIM pulls LUCY into the now empty classroom.
INT. INT'L SCHOOL TIM'S CLASSROOM –DAY
Walking LUCY up to a window, TIM pulls down the shade.
The two fumble at each others clothes.
TIM
(between kisses)
I wanted to tell you how sexy
you looked in your suit.
LUCY
I got it custom made in Vietnam.
Several moments of amorous petting. The door opens.
KATIE, an innocent 6 year old blonde girl in a
matching school skirt and top intrudes on the young
lovers.
KATIE
(not embarrassed)
Hello Miss Kuntz, are you two OK?
LUCY
(frazzled)
Yes, Yes, Katie, we didn't
hear you come in.
KATIE
Momma says I should knock.
TIM
Good advice.
KATIE
But this is a school, so we usually
don't knock on the door.
LUCY
She does have a point.
(a beat)
What can we do for you Katie,
did you forget something?
KATIE
Yes, I forgot my assignment,
it's in my desk.
KATIE casually walks over to a desk in the front row.
KATIE
(taking papers from a desk)
You probably should not go out like
that Miss Kuntze. It's still a bit
rainy outside.
LUCY
Thank you Katie. I'll see you tomorrow.
TIM and LUCY take break from the romance.
LUCY
(tucking the rest of her clothes in)
I guess I should go.
TIM
Do you need a lift anywhere? My driver
should be waiting for me out side, and
I think it's still raining.
Lucy
That is very sweet, but my
girlfriend is picking me up.
TIM
Girlfriend aye? I see. Well thanks
again for inviting me to the UN thing.
I have actually wanted to meet my
neighbors for a while now.
LUCY
It's not the UN you know, just a UN party.
TIM
I know, it's at my neighbors.
Kissing good bye, the PAIR make their separate exits
from the classroom.
EXT. INT'L SCHOOL - PARKING LOT DAY
PARK and the Range Rover are waiting for TIM.
PARK sees TIM too late to open the door for him.
INT. RANGE ROVER CONTINUOUS
PARK
Good afternoon Mr. Tim, how was
students today?
TIM
Pleasant enough, always eager
to learn.
PARK turns the car around and out of the Int'l
school lot.
PARK
(hesitant)
You have been friends with
Muay for several months?
TIM
Yes, we are good friends. Muay and
his father.
PARK
Have you ever been to his father's
home?
TIM
No, not yet, I think he was going
to take me to meet his sisters
tomorrow after the kickboxing match.
(a beat)
Why do you ask?
PARK
His father is famous boxer from Burma,
and they are supposed to have a very
nice compound, yet he still works as
your gardener, I'm a little curious
about them.
TIM
You should get to know them better.
I'm sure they would be happy to
have you at their house as well.
PARK
Mr. Tim you not understand the place
of many workers in Burma, some place
not associate with other place.
TIM
He's a gardener, you're a driver,
forgive me but I don't see much of a
difference in status there.
PARK
It goes far beyond that.
Hard to explain.
PARK pulls into a dirt parking lot with many
buildings. This is the National Sports complex.
PARK
We here for your judo workout.
TIM
I'll see you in a couple of hours.
PARK
Yes, kick the but Tim.
PARK watches TIM walk across the courtyard, and up the
steps of the National Sports complex.
PARK gets out of the SUV. PARK walks across the street
to an open aired tea shack. BORLA and PRIFER are once
again waiting for him.
INT. OPEN AIRED TEA SHACK CONTINUOUS
Conversation in Burmese with English subtitles
PRIFER
You are an idiot. How could there be
a tree made of money? You think they
have everything there, except tea.
BORLA
They have tea, they just don't like
to drink it.
PARK sits with the two BURMESE arguing.
PRIFER
(to Park)
Did you find out anything more?
PARK
I didn't ask him about the tea.
PRIFER
We are concerned also about the crystal.
PARK
He has not seen the crystal.
BORLA lets out a sigh.
PARK
But he is planning to go to the Par Ten
compound tomorrow, and I think Muay
will try and impress our Mister America
by showing him their family treasure.
PRIFER
Well, Suzuki is up stairs trying to meet
him. If he finds out on his own he won't
need any of us.
BORLA
We'll never know for sure about the tea.
INT. BURMESE JUDO DOJO DAY
TIM enters the training hall. The spartan dojo has
some martial arts posters surrounding a central mat.
Utilitarian benches border the East and North ends.
Some of the JUDO PLAYERS are on the mat doing individual stretches. Others

TIM walks down the stairs to find PARK
waiting at the range rover.
PARK opens the door for TIM. TIM flops down
into the back seat as PARK closes the door.
ANGLE ON: PARK looks over to see PRIFER and
BORLA watching.
PARK nods to the shadowy pair as he gets into the driver's
seat to drive away.
As the Range Rover drives off SUZUKI makes his way down
the sports complex stairs where he is met by PRIFER

KNOCK on the door.
TIM turns to see CUI LONG(23) bathed in the emerging

CUI LONG, one of TIM'S girlfriends. CUI LONG
appears to be very high maintenance, dressed in
fashionable Burmese and Western wear.
TIM gets up, opens the door. CUI LONG falls into
his arms.
CUI LONG
I know you were expecting me.
(a beat)
I sent you 2 postcards telling

Are there any songs about girls?
TIM
I'd say, probably most of them.
MUAY
Tell me.

TIM

MUAY(CONT'D.)
There is much legend about the crystal.
There is an opposite that fits into the
Yang. It was stolen from Burma by a Japanese
Major during the Second World War. The
Yang Crystal represents many things, light,
truth, peace, it has contained within it,
as you can see part of the Ying element, its
opposite. It is said that whoever joins both
crystals has unlimited power, but that power
was never intended to rest in the hands of
mortal men.
TIM
It's the most beautiful thing I've ever
seen, so pure, powerful. Where is the
other piece?
MUAY'S speech returns to broken English.
MUAY
People believe underworld figure in
Japan have it, along with many priceless

(curious)
Seems same.
MUAY
But is not. You feel guilt is when you
did something wrong, and you often must

(a beat)
Tell me more about this Yang Crystal.
PAR TEN(v.o.)
The Ying-Yang Crystal, was once a talisman
of power for the ancient capitol, Bagan.
It is was created by Di Ping, a famous
traveling monk of the 2nd Chinese dynasty.
Di Ping's sculptures were all known to have
mystic powers. The Ying-Yang Crystal was Di
Ping's most famous work. It was forged from a
unique quartz crystal, found in a quarry in
far northern Burma, close to China. This
crystal was a perfect sphere, one half jet
black, the other pure white. Each half of
the crystal had a circle of the opposite
color within. This crystal was kept by the
Sultan of Burma, and was believed to be
the seat of his power. When the military
revolution occurred, and Burma was
subsequently occupied by Japan, monks

to unite both pieces.

Japanese general, and taken back to Japan. The
Yang portion had remained hidden, until now.

SAITO picks up a Telefax.
SAITO
According to this bulletin, the Japanese
Yen has gone up 30% overnight, not only
that, your President has announced the
withdrawl of American forces from Okinawa
and other areas of Japan. Since WWII,
Japan's military has had many restrictions;
this announcement indicates a drop of all
checks on Japanese military operations.
(a beat)
There is legend of the power that the
crystal you speak of has on nations.
(A beat)
According to my son, Suzuki has been mixed
up with a Japanese gangster family, the
same family, I believe who's great grandfather
was the Major who was stationed
in Burma during the war, and is thought
to have the Ying crystal in his possession.
It is possible that the revolutionaries
have attacked again today because Suzuki
has taken the crystal out of Burma.
(several beats)
SAITO is lost in contemplation.
SAITO leans across his desk, presses a button
on his phone.
SAITO
Miyumi

Yes sir, we will be ready,
thank you for understanding
what has happened.
SAITO
It is my job, and the future
of both our countries.
TIM, PAR TEN nod their heads. The trio get up,
bow to SAITO. Head for the door.
ANGLE ON: SAITO watching the TRIO leave.
EXT/INT. TIM'S LIMO—DAY

beset by the women.
BETRI/GOTINA/FLAYTREE
What happened, did you find the crystal?
FLAYTREE
We were so worried, why did you
not say when you would return?
BETRI
What is happening in the rest
of the city?
PAR TEN
Just calm down. We think we
know what happened. Tim and
I, along with the Japanese
ambassador are going to Japan.
The women are shocked into silence.
(a beat)
PAR TEN
No time to talk or to argue.
Muay will stay with the family.
PAR TEN strides off to the main house,
leaving TIM and MUAY with an awkward silence.
Ashamed TIM does not want to face the sisters.
TIM
Muay, will you show me what happened
in the treasure room?
MUAY
OK.
TIM and MUAY walk to the adjacent building.
MUAY
I know you did not mean to put our
family in peril.
TIM
I hope that's plain, but I can't help
feeling horrible. I've never been
to Japan, how are we, Par Ten and I
going to find Suzuki, seems crazy.
MUAY
My father has a sense somehow
about these things, I feel that he
will be able to do whatever is
necessary.
TIM
I hope so, I would think there is
A good chance that we may not come
back from Japan.
(awkward pause)
EXT. PAR TEN COMPOUND- TREASURE ROOM- DAY
TIM and MUAY walk up the steps to the treasure room.
The lock is broken off the hinge. The door is ajar.
The pair exchange glances as they push open the door.
INT. PAR TEN COMPOUND PAR TEN'S ROOM DAY
PAR TEN makes haste putting together
a small knapsack of clothes and odd weapons.
ANGLE ON: a hidden compartment that contains

a Gurkha knife; and several oddly shaped
balloons that are smoke bombs.
PAR TEN removes a black karate uniform.
INT. PAR TEN COMPOUND TREASURE ROOM DAY
TIM and MUAY examine the treasure room, searching
for any clues. Nothing of value can be found.
The remaining treasures stare down at TIM

EXT. PAR TEN COMPOUND TREASURE ROOM REVERSE ANGLE
TIM and MUAY come out into the light rain.
Commotion of the revolution is heard
in the distance.
TIM'S POV: main house, PAR TEN comes outside.
PAR TEN
We go.
(to MUAY)
Things will likely get worse
as the days go by. The rebels may even
take over the city.
(a beat)
Keep the family safe, we may have a hard
time flying back into the country, but
if the Crystal is in the possession of
this Suzuki, I will return with it.
TIM shakes hands with MUAY, MUAY hugs PAR TEN.
MUAY
Good luck.
The WOMEN hug PAR TEN, even the DOG is apprehensive. PAR TEN stoops down to
say good bye to SCHMOOK.
PAR TEN and TIM get into the Range Rover.
TIM
Back to my place Park.
INT. TIM'S RANGE ROVER DAY
PAR TEN
We have no time to go to your home.
I brought an extra black uniform for
you and some other clothes. If we
need to we can get more clothes and
supplies in Japan.
(to PARK)
Take us straight to the airport please.
ANGLE ON: PARK looking for approval from TIM.
ANGLE ON: TIM nods his head
TIM
What about money?
PAR TEN
I have some money.
(several beats)
Do not feel too guilty, mistakes
in judgment are the most common.
(a beat)
Nefarious people have a way
of finding out information that
they are looking for. The best
you can do is learn from your
mistakes. Try and make right
past errors. Perhaps you will
get a chance to apply some of the
training you have studied.
TIM looks out the window.
EXT. BURMESE CITY STREETS REVOLUTION DAY
Semi chaos is in the air.
EXT. BURMESE AIRPORT SECURITY CHECK GATE DAY
TIM's SUV pulls up to the guard checkpoint.
2 Burmese MILITARY POLICEMEN man

Where are you going?
PARK
We are meeting the Japanese ambassador.
MP#2 checks his clip board.
PAR TEN rolls the window down, sticks his
head out the window.
PAR TEN
You don't have to check your
clip board.
MP #2
You don't have to check your
clip board.
PAR TEN
They are not the rebels you are
looking for.
MP #2
They are not the rebels you are
looking for.
PAR TEN
Move along.
MP #2
Move along.
INT. RANGE ROVER DAY
TIM looks at PAR TEN. PAR TEN cracks a faint smile.
TIM
How did you do that?
PAR TEN
Certain powers can be
exercised on the weekminded.
EXT. BURMESE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - DAY
The Myanmar International airport, is chaotic.
PEOPLE are scrambling to get out of the country
MILITARY PERSONNEL with rifles walk around
checking everyone. Long lines at every counter.
INT. RANGE ROVER DAY
TIM
It's hard to believe that I am
the cause of this.
PAR TEN
Too often the truth is the hardest to
accept.
EXT. BURMESE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - DAY
TIM and PAR TEN enter the airport with their baggage.
ANGLE ON: SAITO waiting, searching the crowd
in front of the departure terminal.
REACTION SHOT: SAITO sees the travelers.
REVERSE ANGLE: TIM and PAR TEN walk up to SAITO.
SAITO
(bows)
I have arranged us to be on military
plane. But we must hurry. Come this
way please.
Many INTERNATIONAL PEOPLES are waiting to leave
the country. TIM looks around the crowd, he sees
Yulina and Alina the Blonde Swedish TRAVELERS.
SAITO
Please, this way.
SAITO ushers the PAIR to a side door with a
JAPANESE MP standing guard. The MP bows
to SAITO as he takes the PAIR through the door.
INT. AIRPORT LABYRINTH CORRIDOR
TRACKING SHOT: TRIO through the bowels of the airport.
PAR TEN
What is our plan?
SAITO
(hurried, slightly out of breath)
I have already made some inquires with
contacts in Japan, and will have some
more information when we arrive.
Hopefully Suzuki still has the crystal in
his possession, and we can intercept him
before he meets with the Yamamoto clan.
If he has already sold the artifact it
will be far more difficult.
EXT. BURMESE AIRPLANE TARMAC - DAY
The TRIO exit on to the Tarmac in front of
a mid-sized plane.
ANGLE ON: TIM looking up at the plane.
2 more JAPANESE MP's are at the bottom of
the steps of the plane. They bow to SAITO.
SAITO
This is it.
The TRIO walk up the stairs, at the top
TIM turns around to take a last look at BURMA.
Plane starts as the stairs are raised.
Airplane taxis and lifts off.
8 HOURS LATER
EXT. KANSAI AIRPORT DAY
Kansai airport is an hour outside of Osaka.
Trees and fields of rice, instead of an
urban sprawl are seen.
INT. BURMESE AIRPLANE DAY
SAITO'S plane makes a smooth landing on the
ground in Japan.
TIM'S POV: LOOKING OUT PLANE WINDOW
TIM see's Japanese GROUND CREW dressed in functional
gray jumpsuits, knee pads and helmets.
Past prejudices melt away from TIM's face
changing his view of blue collar workers.
INT. KANSAI AIRPORT DAY
The airport is not crowded. BUSINESS MEN,
both FOREIGN and JAPANESE make up the bulk
of the crowd. Japanese FAMILIES, with
young CHILDREN are among the crowd.
One 5 year old Japanese BOY, along
with his 7 year old SISTER stare at TIM.
TIM notices and looks back just as
inquisitive. The children's MOTHER,
feeling that her children are being
rude scolds them.
MOTHER
(to her children
in Japanese)
Dame!! Don't stare.
(bowing to TIM)
Sumimasen.
TIM smiles and gives a slight bow
PAR TEN(o.s.)
(to Tim)
How is your Japanese?
TIM
I can count to 10.
What is sumimasen?
PAR TEN
Sumimasen is excuse me.
It is the first word you learn
in Japan. You should also be
able to say outside foot sweep.
TIM
Yes, I can say that. That and
100 yen might get me on the subway.
PAR TEN
No, it's actually a lot more
difficult than that.
SAITO
(partly hearing their
conversation)
My driver Takeno will be waiting
to assist us.
ANGLE ON: 2 Japanese SCHOOL GIRLS, 15 years old,
watching TIM. They hold their hands up to their
mouths as they giggle. When TIM notices the GIRLS
they get embarrassed and look away.
INT. KANSAI INT'L AIRPORT MAIN LOBBY DAY
SAITO ushers his guests through customs.
ANGLE ON: A golden retriever that seemes to
take no notice of Tim.
The TRIO emerge from the customs station.
Indeed, TAKENO was waiting attentively.
TAKENO(35) is stocky and powerfully built,
sporting cauliflower ears, and dark
penetrating sunglasses.
TAKENO bows graciously when SAITO appeared.
SAITO
(Japanese)
Sashibori, kore wa Timu, to
Par-Ten san desu.
TAKENO
(Japanese)
Dozo, yoroshiku onagaishimasu.
Two more, equally gracious bows are awarded to the
BURMESE and the young AMERICAN.
TAKENO takes as much of the group's luggage
as he can carry. Escorts the company outside.
TIM is still in awe and obviously a stranger
in a strange land.
EXT. KANSAI INT'L AIRPORT MAIN ENTRANCE DAY
TAKENO escorts the TRIO to a stretch
limousine waiting by the curb. The limo
easily accommodates the group and their baggage.
Holding the door open for SAITO, and PARTY
he next runs around to the driver's side door.
EXT./INT. SAITO LIMOSENE DRIVING DAY
PASSENGERS POV: Out the window gaps of
land between homes starts to diminish
drastically, until their view was of
one housing complex after another.
The limo stops at a traffic light.
EXT. JAPAN- SUBURBAN ROADWAY - DAY
A one-man scooter stops at a phone booth.
A MAN from the phone company dismounts.
TIM watches the MAN from the window of
the limo. The MAN inspects the hinges
of the phone booth door. Not smooth enough.
The MAN produces a can of oil, oils the
hinges. Satisfied, he jumps
back on his moped.
The MAN glances at the tinted windows of
The limo, even though he cannot see in
we see him bow to the respectful car.
INT. SAITO LIMOSENE CONTINUOUS
TIM unconsciously returns the bow.
TIM
Did that guy just bow to our car?
PAR TEN gives TIM a short look turns to SAITO.
PAR TEN
What are our chances of retrieving
the crystal?
SAITO
I have some calls to make when
we get to my residence. I have
many contacts with people close
to the Yamamoto clan. First we
must see if Suzuki plans to meet
with the Oyabun, we go from there.
(a beat)
PAR TEN
I feel that the crystal is here.
ALL eyes turn to PAR TEN.
EXT. KYOTO SUBURBS DRIVING DAY
Some mountains are seen from the
window of the Limo.
Deep in the suburbs of Kyoto. The party now
arrives at the gates of the diplomat's home.
EXT. KYOTO SUBURBS SAITO'S HOME - DUSK
Over the tops of terraced walls, the only visible
occupants of the SAITO home are tips of bonsai
trees, manicured to perfection.
Takeno must get out to open the rod iron gates of
SAITO's compound.
INT. SAITO LIMO CONTINUOUS
TIM'S jaw drops as he takes in the fantastic
garden of SAITO'S Kyoto residence.
EXT. KYOTO SUBURBS SAITO'S HOME GARDEN - DAY
Working fifty meters back in the garden,
Tim spots a Zen GARDENER.
The limousine starts up a long gardened driveway.
ANGLE ON: GARDENER working harmoniously.
The AMBASSADOR'S home is a modern, marvel of
Japanese architecture. An intricate stone
covered path moves over a shallow stream.
An imposing 8 foot 3 ton stone lantern dominates
the garden right in front of the home.
INT. KYOTO SUBURBS SAITO'S HOME - DAY
KEIKO(48), SAITO'S wife, looks up from her
calligraphy to see the limo arrive.
Jumping up she runs outside to meet the
intrepid PARTY.
EXT. KYOTO SUBURBS SAITO'S HOME DRIVE WAY
KEIKO has an understated beauty that is limited
by the formal kimono that she is wearing.
KEIKO
(bowing continuously)
Irashimasen, Irashimasen!
TAKENO stops the car, gets out, runs around to open
the passenger side doors.
Stepping out, SAITO bows curtly to KEIKO
then embraces her.
SAITO and his WIFE speak briefly in Japanese.
KEIKO turns to the guests to make her
introductions.
KEIKO
Irashaii!! My English trying, please
to help.
TIM is taken with her elegance, curious, he tries to
catch KEIKO'S eye for an extra moment of intimacy.
She seems oblivious to his innocent invitation.
INT. KYOTO - SAITO HOME DAY
The party, removes their shoes in the foyer
guest sandals are communally distributed.
A step up brings hardwood floors. The Japanese
architecture is immediately calming.
KEIKO
How ... feel, you must tired?
The GUESTS respond, admitting fatigue.
KEKIO
We have 2 baths drawn.
Please to follow.
KEIKO takes the ASIAN and AMERICAN to an adjoining
room, where futons are set out. Attached to
the rooms are Japanese style baths.
KEIKO
Please rest here until you are refreshed.
PAR TEN and TIM nod their heads, fall on their
respective beds.
KEIKO slides the wood and paper door closed.
ANGLE ON: Art on the Shoji door. The art work on
the sliding door shows traditional Japanese themes
that feature the Ying and Yang elements.
INT. KYOTO - SAITO HOME Hallway - CONTINUOUS
SAITO
(passing KEIKO)
Office ni ikimasu.
SATITO takes his tea to an office room that has
a computer and several telephones.
INT. SAITO HOME- SAITO'S OFFICE CONTINUOUS
SAITO puts the tea on a circular stone coaster,
turns on a computer, picks up the phone and
starts his investigation.
EXT. OSAKA STREET NIGHT
KEIJI SUZUKI is walking in Shinsaibashi a hip area of
Osaka. He is on his cell phone.
SUZUKI
(Japanese with English subtitles)
Yes, we will meet tomorrow, it is
my honor to bring you this gift.
INT. SAITO HOME- SAITO'S OFFICE - LATER
SAITO speaking quickly in Japanese,
gathering relevant information.
INT. SAITO HOME- GUEST ROOM - CONTINUOUS
PAR TEN and TIM awaken at about the same time.
Sitting up on their elbows, they glance
around the room. Small Buddhist statues inhabit
alcoves in the wall. Ying Yang elements are
present in the Japanese style scene that is
depicted on the off white sliding wall.
From the other side the wall is slid slowly open as
PAR TEN and TIM admire it.
KEIKO
(Japanese)
O gohan arimasu. Dozo, onagaishimasu.
Rested now, the 3 not so weary investigators
have a meal at the SAITO family table.
INT. SAITO HOME- KITCHEN - NIGHT
SAITO
I have some information.
(a beat)
Keiji Suzuki. The traveler thief
has been spotted by some underworld
informants in Osaka. I will meet
with one of these sellers of
information tonight, although it is
already late we must see if he still
has the crystal. I will find out if
there is going to be a meeting, and
where it is going to be held.
Most of our suspicions have been confirmed.
Suzuki is apparently planning to sell
the Yang part of the crystal to Ozabo,
(MORE)
SAITO(CONT'D.)
the Oyabun, the current head of the
Yamamoto clan here in Osaka.
PAR TEN
What can we do?
SAITO
I suggest you stay here.
I will phone if we can do anything
more tonight, hopefully we are not
too late, and we can find him tomorrow.
(a beat)
SAITO
(calling off camera)
NORI!!
NORI(o.s.)
Hai!
NORI(24)an attractive Japanese enters frame, he bows.
NORI
(bowing)
Yoroshiku onagaishimasu.
SAITO
This is my son Nori. He will stay
here with you and my wife. I will
return soon with plans for tomorrow.
SAITO leaves through the front door.
TIM and PAR TEN stare blankly at each other.
TIM
I'm not tired anymore.
PAR TEN
Neither am I.
(a beat)
(to Nori)
Do you have a dojo here?
NORI
Hai, arimasiyo.
INT. SAITO HOME DOJO TRAINING ROOM - NIGHT
TIM and PAR TEN are in karate clothes sparring.
NORI watches.
PAR TEN
This should give you need for rest.
TIM
I don't want to go to hard on you,
We may need our strength for tomorrow.
NORI
If either of you get hurt my father
will be very upset with me.
PAR TEN
We'll go light, agreed?
TIM
Agreed.
TIM and PAR TEN bow and grip fight. Each throwing
the other several times, then wrestling on the mat.
PAR TEN catches TIM in an arm bar, TIM slaps the mat.
Back and forth they enjoy the work out.
ANGLE ON: NORI
NORI
You are both well skilled. I suggest
you rest for tomorrow however.
TIM and PAR TEN look at each other.
TIM
One more.
PAR TEN nods in agreement.
Fighting again for grips, PAR TEN spins
in with a one armed shoulder throw, launching
TIM over his shoulder. TIM lands hard on the mat
but brakes his fall by slapping the mat falling
cleanly.
NORI applauds.
FADE TO BLACK
EXT. SUN RISING IN RED OVER KYOTO -
VIEW FROM KIYOMIZU TEMPLE
EXT. SAITO GARDEN MORNING
GARDENER is trimming trees near the house.
INT. SAITO HOUSE KITCHEN MORNING
SAITO, NORI, KEIKO, TIM and PAR TEN are
all gathered around the kitchen table
eating a light Japanese breakfast.
SAITO
I think you should take your
minds off of this business for
now by taking in a temple garden,
and I'll meet you in the afternoon,
after I've found out more about the
clandestine meeting.
(a beat)
Nori will be happy to take you
to Ryoanji, a famous temple on
the hillside overlooking Kyoto.
PAR TEN
Is there nothing we can do?
SAITO
I'm sorry, not at present. We should
have more answers later today.
(a beat)
NORI
It is best to walk to the train, from
there we can go anywhere in Kyoto.
TIM
I'd like to see some of Japan before
we go home, if we make it.
Awkward silence.
PAR TEN
I understand. Are you well from
last night's work out?
TIM
A bit sore.
WIPE TO:
EXT. SAITO HOME REAR ENTRANCE- DAY
NORI, TIM, PAR TEN walk out of the back entrance.
They are greeted by the GARDENER.
The GARDENER bows to NORI and the guests.
An inquisitive look appears on his face.
He seems to recognize PAR TEN.
GARDENER
(Japanese with English subtitles)
Sumimasen, ano, ...
(Nori Translates)
He is saying, “Please, forgive the
intrusion sir, but are you perhaps
Par Ten, the Burmese fighting figure
who came to Japan to contest with
Maida Son?"
A slight smile breaks on PAR TEN'S
otherwise stoic face.
PAR TEN
(Japanese with English subtitles)
Yes, it is true I am Par Ten.
GARDENER
(Nori Translates)
It is a great honor to meet you
sir, perhaps if you have time you
could show some of my colleges
and myself the moves you used to
defeat our national champion Akuta
Nogawa.
PAR TEN
We must return to Burma as soon as
possible, assuming that we are
successful in our mission. If we are
not successful, I am not sure what
will happen.
The GARDENER bows low as the TRIO pass.
TIM
What was he talking about Par Ten?
You never told me that you had
been to Japan.
PAR TEN
You have never asked me Mr. Tim.
Where did you think I learned how
to speak Japanese?
TIM
I didn't know you knew Japanese until
yesterday. And you told me that
you were National Champion of Burma,
and that you learned your fighting
style from a traveling Japanese
martial artist. A famous fighter
who brought judo and ju-jitsu
to different areas around the world.
PAR TEN
This is true, I just did not
mention my exploits in Japan.
NORI breaks in to the conversation as politely as
possible.
NORI
I have heard many stories of the
Noguchi era, and the undefeated
Burmese man who traveled to Japan
for a no holds barred contest, you
are a very famous man in Japan, I
would not be surprised if many older
gentlemen recognize you.
EXT. SAITO HOME GARDEN
The TRIO pass through the garden, TIM takes
notice of the magnificently manicured trees.
NORI notices the interest on TIM'S face.
NORI
If you think these trees are
spectacular, wait to you see
the garden at Ryoanji.
ANGEL ON: GARDENER lost again in his work.
EXT. SUBURBAN KYOTO - SAITO HOME CONTINUOUS
The streets of SAITO's neighborhood are
not very wide, affording only one car
width comfortably. The stone walls that
meet the street seem ancient.
The solitary paved street soon give way
to more and more PEDESTRAINS, as the TRIO
approaches the center of SAITO's small town.
Not accustomed to seeing Westerners, it is
apparent that the PEOPLE TIM passes on the
street are curious. Culture prevents them from
anything but a fleeting moment of eye contact.
Many PEOPLE TIM passes look conspicuously
at their watches, to avoid any chance
of interaction with the foreigner.
TIM begins to feel oddly out of place as he passes
Storefronts selling native Japanese goods.
EXT. SAITO'S TOWN - TRAIN STATION ESTABLISHING SHOT DAY
INT. SUBURBAN KYOTO TOWN- TRAIN STATION DAY
NORI purchases train tickets, as his companions
study the posted Japanese train schedule.
Some English is written under the signs
for the name of SAITO'S town, everything
else is in Japanese.
NORI directs PAR TEN and TIM through the gate and
onto the platform.
ANGLE ON: TRAIN TRACKS as a train BOLTS by.
Another train right behind comes to a halt.
The train doors open directly in front of the TRIO.
TIM
(to NORI)
Is it true that people have to be
physically pushed into the cars?
NORI
On rush hour it can be very crowded,
I have friends from my university that
often have to stand on the train for
over one hour before there is room to
sit.
WIPE:
EXT. KYOTO STATION DAY
The TRIO emerge from underground stairs to
the sights and sounds of KYOTO.
NORI directs PAR TEN and TIM to the
appropriate bus.
TRIO board the bus.
CUT TO:
INT. SAITO'S LIMO DAY
SAITO is on the car phone.
SAITO
(Japanese with English subtitles)
Please tell the Prime Minister
that I will try and speak with
him tomorrow but everyone seems
safe for now.
(listening)
Yes, yes, I understand, thank you.
SAITO presses a button on the car phone.
Makes another call.
SAITO(CONT'D.)
Hachisan, yes, long time.
So do you have some information.
(listening)
Yes, of course, I'll meet you there.
SAITO sits back, stares out the window,
presses a button to hang up his phone.
EXT. RYOAN JI TEMPLE ESTABLISHING SHOT- DAY
As in the SAITO garden, every piece of flora was
exquisite, obviously manicured from saplings by
the gardener's unseen poetic eye.
Traveling on to the main temple complex, the TRIO
pass a cadre of elderly Japanese WOMEN, RUNNING
to catch a bus.
REACTION SHOT: TIM watching the elderly Japanese WOMEN.
NORI stops at the entrance of Ryoanji temple to pay
for the guests. The architecture of the temple is
simple, and austere. The colors subtle, soft hues.
The eye is allowed to flow endlessly from one end
of the structure to the other, nothing jumping out at
the viewer. Each angle, each wall harmoniously joined
with the next.
The TRIO enter the rock garden. The tourist
attraction is experiencing an apparent lull
in the proverbial tourist storm.
NORI motions for PAR TEN and TIM to sit on the steps
above the garden. NORI assumes a comfortable easy
pose. Legs crossed and spine straight.
PAR TEN and TIM follow suit. The TRIO stare reflectively
at the stones in the rock garden. They resemble the flowing lines of the
sea. Larger stones representing islands in
an ocean of water.
ANGLE ON: TIM glancing toward his companions.
They are lost in thought.
Several Moments of quite contemplation eventually broken
by a group of JAPANESE TOURISTS mostly older WOMEN chatting incessantly
among themselves.
NORI
Let us go to the Philosophers path.
PAR TEN and TIM leave their meditation behind.
The TRIO get up, bow as they pass the group of JAPANESE TOURISTS.
JAPANESE TOURISTS AD LIB tourist excitement.
PAR TEN(o.s.)
(to TIM)
Government, politics, and crime are all
motivated by the common denominator,
money. In Japan there is the spirit of
the Samurai. Loyalty and face are ever
present. It is said that Japanese have
3 faces. One they show to the outside
world, in work and play outside the home.
One face is visible to only their family,
(MORE)
(CONT'D.)
and one is shown only to themselves.
The inscrutable Japanese it is an apt term.
EXT. KYOTO - DOWNTOWN STREET –DAY
SAITO'S limo is parked on a boulevard street in
northern Kyoto, this street is Kitaoji dori. We
see SAITO sitting inside at a table by the entrance.
SAITO is waiting to meet one of his closest childhood
friends, MASAYUKI HACHIYA, an advisor for the
Kanagawa family. Kanagawa is the second largest
crime family in Japan.
INT. KYOTO NORTHERN KYOTO COFFEE SHOP- DAY
SAITO'S POV: looking out on to Kitaoji dori.
HACHIYA arrives promptly at 2 PM.
SAITO stands as HACHIYA arrives. The two men bow
formally, SAITO motions for HACHIYA to sit.
Following conversation in Japanese
with English subtitles.
SAITO
Remember when we would bring
our girlfriends to Mizuno-shi
park in high school?
HACHIYA
Could I forget that? Japan
has been good to us.
SAITO
Yes, but now it needs us more than
ever. I feel there is a great evil
afoot. If Ozabo is able to join
the 2 crystals, he will have more
power than any one man should have.
HACHIYA
My grandfather had told me of the
legend of the crystal, and I have
heard many stories of how the Ying
portion has helped Yamamoto succeed.
I found out what I think you want to
know old friend.
ANGLE ON: SATIO'S eyes, widening in anticipation.
HACHIYA
I have found out that Ozabo himself is
planning to attend a meeting tonight in
the outskirts of Osaka. He will no doubt
have heavy security, and is planning to
meet Keiji Suzuki, the one you say stole
the crystal from the Burmese.
SAITO
How did you get all this information?
HACHIYA
I have my contacts.
(a beat)
The world in which we walk in is all to
small. How else can I help you?
SAITO
Just the location and times
of the meetings would be invaluable.
HACHIYA
They plan to meet at the Musashi
building in Hirakata Shi. I think
you know this building well. 8 p.m.
is the time. I don't know if the
thief will have the crystal with
him or not. I would guess that he
would keep it in a safe place until
he could secure payment from Ozabo.
SAITO
Ozabo must yield to O-kite.
(a beat)
HACHIYA
I agree, Ozabo will no doubt play by
the rules, but there is no guarantee
that the thief will have the crystal
with him. A new breed of criminal has
emerged in the last decade. Western
culture has been making inroads into
the East for years. Whether this
infiltration will bring about a total
collapse of our value system remains
to be seen. Are you sure there is
nothing else I can do?
SAITO
Thank you old friend, but I believe
this battle will be won by just
a few individuals.
SAITO checks his watch.
SAITO(CONT'D.)
I must go and meet the others who
have come with me from Burma on
this mission.
HACHIYA
Is there nothing I can do?
SAITO
(stands up)
Pray that we are successful.
HACHIYA stands, bows a long bow as SAITO exits the
coffee shop.
INT/EXT. KYOTO NORTHERN KYOTO SAITO LIMO- DAY
ANGLE ON: TAKENO sees SAITO exit the coffee shop.
TAKENO puts down the newspaper he has been reading,
jumps outside to open the car door for SAITO.
ANGLE ON: SAITO gives a very curt bow, his eyes
affirming that he has gotten the necessary

famed philosophers path, many Japanese are out
enjoying the autumn day.
NORI'S cell phone rings on low volume, quietly
disturbing the moment.
REACTION SHOT: PAR TEN and TIM feel their
peaceful time is close to an end.
NORI reaches inside his jacket as he looks
at his companions.
NORI
(bows to TIM and PAR TEN)
Ahh, Sumimasen.
Holds phone to his ear.
NORI
Mushi, mushi?
(a beat)
(bowing as he speaks)
NORI(CONT'D.)
Ehh, ehh, hai, Gin Kaku Ji
Chikaku, hai, hai, sumimasen.
NORI presses a button on the phone to end the call.
NORI
My father is in the area, he wants
to meet with us at a coffee house very
near to here. Just around the corner
I think.
INT. SASUKO'S APT. KYOTO CITY DAY
KEIJI SUZUKI is in a heated debate with his girlfriend SASUKO(25). SASUKO
is dressed in a hip sexy style,
attractive non-functional belt drapes her thin waist.
Mascara accentuates her seductive eyes.
Conversation in Japanese with English subtitles.
SUZUKI
I told you, if I do not bring the
crystal with me they will kill me.
SASUKO
They will kill you anyway.
SUZUKI
That is not true, these are
honorable Yakuza.
SASUKO
Honorable gangsters, listen
to yourself.
SUZUKI
I did not risk my life in Burma
for nothing, I must do it their
way or I cannot do at all. They
need people like me. I wish you
were more like a traditional
Japanese girl then I wouldn't
have to listen to your ideas.
SASUKO
You don't want a traditional
Japanese girl. You wouldn't be
where you are today if not for me.
SUZUKI
Maybe true, but in this matter
you must let my judgment stand.
EXT/INT. BRAZILIAN COFFEE SHOP NORTHERN KYOTO DAY
NORI, PAR TEN and TIM, looking a tad weary from
the day enter the coffee shop and find SAITO.
SAITO bows curtly, motions for them to sit. Immediately
a waiter is upon them with glasses of chilled tea.
WAITER
Irrashiemasen.
SAITO
Nomitai desu ka?
NORI
Would you like something to drink?
Looking up at the menu in chalk behind the bar,
TIM sees coffee.
TIM
A coffee please.
PAR TEN
For me also.
SAITO
Cohee, san bon.
WAITER
Hai!
(a beat)
SAITO
I hope that you are not too
exhausted from the day's events.
We will be using all our strengths
and abilities tonight.
REACTION SHOT: PAR TEN and TIM
(a beat)
SAITO(CONT'D.)
My source tells me that Suzuki is
here in the city. He will meet with
Ozabo tonight. I have a plan.
Stake out the meeting, and
take the crystal.
TIM
Sounds simple.
PAR TEN
If we fail, we will no doubt be killed
and Burma and Japan will see
many more deaths than our own.
TIM
Not so simple then.

Meeting in Japanese with English subtitles.
JAPANESE MEN AD LIB pre meeting bantor.
OZABO
Kyotsuke!
The other OYABAN'S stop their talking. All come to
attention in their chairs.
OZABO
Tonight will be a night that will
be remembered for along time to come.
We well have within our possession
the other half, of this!
OZABO removes a white silk handkerchief from a fist
sized object that has been sitting on the counter.
The OYABAN'S gasp in awe, as the beauty and power of
jet black Ying Crystal captivates them.
INT. SAITO HOME- GUEST ROOM NIGHT
KEIKO slides the shoji door open. Peers in.
KEIKO
Please to diner.
INT. SAITO HOME- DINNING ROOOM - NIGHT
A simple but functional meal is laid out for the
intrepid group.
SAITO, NORI already seated, rise when TIM and
PAR TEN enter and sit.
ANGLE ON: TIM taking in the food. A mélange of small
dishes crowds the table.
SAITO
Be sure not to over eat, just
enough to give strength.
Heeding SAITO'S warning not to over indulge, the group
eat slowly and are soon satisfied.
NORI
Who will go?
SAITO
It will be myself, Takeno, Tim and
Par Ten. Any more will be too many.
NORI is disappointed but realizes that he
is not properly trained for the assignment.
INT. SAITO HOME- SHRINE ROOM - NIGHT
A small impromptu prayer ceremony is
conducted by Saito.
SAITO
Baaaa, Riiii, Gaaa, Noooo
Moriii, Naaaa, Noooo
Riii, Ahhhh, Noooo.
Looking like assassins, not temple goers, the 4
seem out of place but try their best to honor the
spirit of the prayer.
INT. SAITO GUEST ROOM - NIGHT
PAR TEN shows the OTHERS his cache of traditional
weapons. A short traditional sword, some Chinese
throwing stars, a blow gun with Burmese poison.
TAKENO displays some similar mortal devices of
Japanese origin.

INT. SAITO LIMO DRIVING NEAR MUSASHI BUILDING NIGHT
EXT. HIRAKATA SHI MUSASHI BUILDING - NIGHT
The SAITO limo arrives at the suspected
meeting place, the OZABO clan office.
The suburban city is alive with JAPANESE SALERYMEN
who have just finished work. Wasting no time, the
JAPANESE SALERYMEN are out enjoying the night life.
INT. SAITO LIMO DRIVING NEAR MUSASHI BUILDING NIGHT
SAITO
Drive by slowly.
TAKENO
Hai.
Surveying the scene, from the limo SAITO knows immediately
where they should take up positions.
SAITO
If we could just find the thief
with the crystal and overcome
him before the others arrive
SAITO'S words trail off as OZABO arrives.
ANGLE ON: OZABO'S LIMO.
The OZABO party is in 2 large sedans. The first
rolls up to the curb, parking in front. Immediately,
4 square shaped Ozabo HENCHMEN dressed in dark suits
unload. Looking around quickly, the HENCHMEN go to all
4 corners of the second Limo, the door is opened.
OZABO emerges. OZABO wears a sports jacket and slacks,
sun glasses and side burns down to his mid cheek.
OZABO walks into the building quickly,
but seemingly unfettered by the situation.
The BURMESE team looks to SAITO for instructions.
SAITO
We just have to wait.
TIM
(to no one in particular)
What do you think of our chances.
PAR TEN
Now, is the most difficult time
to be patient. Connect with your
breath, cultivate stillness, all
will be as it should.
C.U. OZABO'S HENCHMEN.
(several beats)
SUZUKI arrives in another sedan, he is apparently
alone but for the driver. The driver slows to a
stop to let SUZUKI out.
SAITO(o.s.)
It is impossible to tell whether
he has the crystal with him or not.
HENCHMEN #1 at the front speaks garbled Japanese
quickly into his walkie talkie. HENCHMEN #1 bows
to the voice on the receiving end. HENCHMEN #1
bows as he opens the buildings front door for SUZUKI,
eyeing him as he lets him pass.
INT. SAITO LIMO- CONTINUOUS
SAITO
This way.
(a beat)
I have studied this building.
SAITO motions to his companions. Climbing up an
adjacent building they enter a window on the 3rd
floor of the meeting locale.
SAITO leads the way to a ventilation shaft right
above where the meeting is held.
INT. OZABO MEETING ROOM DAY
OZABO, SUZUKI and 5 HENCHMEN are present.
Meeting in Japanese with English subtitles.
OZABO
You are as resourceful as you
are cunning Suzuki-Chan.
SUZUKI
Thank you master, it is my pleasure
to bring to you what you should
rightly have.
OZABO
And you will be rewarded for your efforts.
SUZUKI bows.
OZABO reaches inside his coat pocket. OZABO'S hand
emerges with a white silk cloth. OZABO puts the cloth
on the table between himself and SUZUKI. OZABO'S and
SUZUKI'S eyes meet. OZABO slips the covering off of
the 'Ying' portion of the crystal.
OZABO
(boasting stoically to the room)
This crystal has given power and
wealth to several generations of my
clan. Never was it to leave the security
of my gates in Honmon-ji, but
today I wanted to match it with
your prize. Do you have the item
of which I speak?
SUZUKI
I do my lord.
SUZUKI reaches within the folds of his cloak,
revealing a similar sphere shaped object in
a black silk pouch.
INT. AIR SHAFT ABOVE MEETING CONTINUOUS
SAITO
Now, our time has come, ready
your blow gun.
SUZUKI uncovers the 'Yang' portion, and places it
Opposite of the ‘Ying. SAITO and PAR TEN push through
the vents. PAR TEN, like a surgeon with his blow gun,
quickly penetrates the necks of 3 of the 5 HENCHMEN
in the room. Thin quiver darts, find their mark as
the HENCHMEN collapse almost immediately.
OZABO quickly returns the 'Ying' crystal to his
pocket. As SUZUKI reaches for his 'Yang' portion,
OZABO grabs SUZUKI'S wrist.
OZABO
Trader! You will die for this.
SUZUKI
No, I don't know who
It is too late, OZABO has drawn a short sword,
slashing SUZUKI'S neck. OZABO now holds the ‘Yang
portion.
As the struggle continues, several of OZABO'S men
lumber into the room.
Swift blows catch HENCHMEN with guns. The only
shots that are fired enter into walls missing
their targets.
PAR TEN displays his skill as a martial artist,
as do TIM and SAITO.
TIM grabs OZABO'S hand, clutching the Yang crystal.
OZABO
(startled by TIM)
Gaijin?!
OZABO slashes his short blade at TIM'S head.
TIM duck's under the medal. TIM catches OZABO in
the mid section with a short punch, simultaneously
he grabs the Crystal from OZABO'S other hand.
TIM
I've got it.
PAR TEN and SAITO look over to TIM for confirmation.
SAITO
Let's go!!
TIM, PAR TEN and SAITO scurry out of the room.
PAR TEN expertly dispatches 2 sets of HENCHMEN
on the way out of the building.
EXT. HIRAKATASHI STREET NIGHT
TAKENO is standing by to usher the party into
SAITO'S waiting limo. The limo takes off down
the street.
ANGLE ON: OZABO stumbling outside with 2 HENCHMEN.
INT. SAITO LIM0 DRIVING - CONTINUOUS
TIM, looks out the back window. Turning back around
TIM looks to PAR TEN for permission to reveal the
crystal. PAR TEN'S eyebrows go up in equal anticipation.
ANGLE ON: TIM'S hands as he removes the Yang Crystal
from under his shirt.
SAITO is awestruck as light reflects brilliantly
off of the crystal.
SAITO
What if we had both, what happens
when the two are united?
PAR TEN
It is sufficient that we have what
we came for. We must return to
Burma at once so we can prevent
the loss of any more lives.
SAITO
I will arrange a flight tonight.
EXT. SAITO HOME- NIGHT
The limo arrives back safe at the SAITO home.
KEIKO and NORI run outside to greet the limo.
KEIKO is beside herself with relief.
KEIKO
Okiri, Okiri!!
SAITO embraces his wife. It is a surreal moment,
they were not sure if they were going to make it.
INT. SAITO HOME SAITO OFFICE - NIGHT
SAITO on the phone tries to arrange for passage back
to Burma.
INT. SAITO HOME GUEST ROOM NIGHT
TIM and PAR TEN attended to their baggage.
SAITO enters the doorway.
SAITO
There are no flights into Burma.
I think you will have to go
overland. From Thailand.
PAR TEN
I thought that that might happen.
TIM is startled slightly with news of more adventures.
SAITO
I will stay in Japan for some few days.
Hopefully you will be able to return the
crystal to your country and peace will
once again be achieved. I will get you
on a plane tomorrow morning. Now have
a good rest for your continued adventures.
PAR TEN and TIM wearily retreat to the guest room.
KEIKO
(Japanese with English subtitles)
Do you think they will be successful?
SAITO
(Japanese with English subtitles)
I hope so, the fate of BURMA
now rests with them.
EXT. KANSAI INT. AIRPORT DAY
SAITO'S limo is parked at the departure terminal
of Thai Airlines. TAKENO helps the visitors with
their luggage. SAITO stands outside.
TIM and PAR TEN bow low to SATIO.
PAR TEN
Thank you for your help.
SAITO
Farewell.
INT. THAI AIRLINES PLANE IN FLIGHT
TIM is staring out the window
reflecting on his brief time in Japan.
TIM
What is our plan now?
PAR TEN
I know of some cities in Thailand,
although I have never been there.
(a beat)
We should fly to Chaing Mai, that
is the capitol in the north. From
there must be public transport to
the border with Burma. The border
may be closed but we will have to
sneak across and travel a few days
to the capitol. Once the crystal
is in Burma the revolution will stop.
(a beat)
You have been before to Thailand?
TIM
Yes, one week I was there.
But just on a beach in the south.
(a beat)
How, can you be so sure the
revolution will end just
because you return the crystal.
PAR TEN
(a quizzical look)
Have you learned nothing?
(several beats)
What is Thailand like, tell me.
TIM
It was just a few days, but I kind of
thought that it was like DisneyLand,
but for adults.
PAR TEN
That doesn't sound like fun.
TIM
No?
PAR TEN
We will only be traveling through anyway.
I believe Thai is similar to Burmese so I
should understand their language.
TIM closes his eyes trying to get some sleep.
DREAM SEQUENCE:
EXT. REBEL TENTED ENCAMPMENT BURMA
TIM sits under a tree with COLNET(56), the leader of the Miop Red
revolutionary group. COLNET is dressed in green army fatigues. Sitting
in-between COLNET and TIM is ARNET a young Burmese boy 8 years old.
MILITARY MEN in fatigues with guns stand casually around.
COLNET
(to ARNET)
Why are you here?
ARNET
I am here because you wished me
here. I am here to show you
your error.
A large explosion is heard in the distance.
END DREAM SEQUENCE:
INT. THAI AIRWAYS PLANE CABIN
ANGLE ON: TIM, the explosion in TIM'S dream wakes
him with a start. TIM turns to Par TEN who appears
to be meditating with eyes open.
PAR TEN
You had a strange dream.
TIM nods his head.
PAR TEN
A very real feeling dream
TIM
How did you know?
PAR TEN
The crystal has intense powers. Why
do you think I risked our lives to
retrieve it? Are you still not convinced
it can stop the revolution?
(a beat)
You are educated, have you learned of Maya?
TIM
(feeling ignorant)
Is that an Indian word?
PAR TEN
Hindi.
(a beat)
It means illusion. Mia refers to
the world that we see now, the
space that out bodies occupy, the
great game that plays out all over
the world every day and night. All
is illusion, a plane of existence
that is just the tip of an iceburg
representing all the planes of existence.
(a beat)
Objects such as the Crystal give us
insight into other realms, they have
powers that are not of this world.
EXT. BANGKOK INTL. AIRPORT RUNWAY
Thai Airways plane touches down on the runway.
INT. BANGKOK INTL. AIRPORT BAGGAGE CAROUSEL DAY
PAR TEN and TIM gather their bags from the
baggage carousel.
The airport has a much more frantic pace than its
Japanese counterpart. BUSINESS MEN, budget travelers,
tourists and Thais make up the bulk of the crowd.
A 5 year old Thai BOY, along with his 7 year old
SISTER stare at TIM. TIM notices and looks back
just as inquisitive. Their THAI MOTHER, smiles
at her friendly children.
THAI MOTHER
(to her children)
Swade kapp putt.
THAI CHILDREN
(to TIM)
Swade kapp.
PAR TEN
(to Tim)
How is your Thai?
TIM
I don't know much Thai.
What is Swade kapp?
PAR TEN
Swade means hello. It is
the first word you learn
in Thailand.
TIM
I see. That's the first word
I learned in Burma.
(a beat)
I wonder if the train is cheaper here.
PAR TEN
I'm sure it is.
ANGLE ON: 2 THAI SCHOOL GIRLS, 15 ears old, watching TIM unabashedly. TIM
notices the GIRLS.
THAI SCHOOL GIRLS
(smiling to TIM)
Swade kapp.
TIM
Swade kapp
(to himself)
Talk about your de ja vous.
TIM and PAR TEN retrieve their luggage.
As they are walking past customs, TIM
notices the headline of the Bangkok Press.
TIM holds his stomach as his mind
overwhelms his body, he has to sit.
TIM puts his head in his hands.
PAR TEN
What is wrong?
TIM, who cannot speak just yet, points to the
paper stand. PAR TEN turns to see.
ANGLE ON: Newspaper in coin operated stand.
READS: Japan stock market crashes, worst loss
in 15 years.
PAR TEN
The power of the crystal is real.
(a beat)
All will be back as it should.
We must make haste to the domestic
terminal. Rest here a moment, I'll
change some money, and find out
where to go.
ANGLE ON: TIM, head in his hands.
CUT TO:
INT. TENT-BURMESE REBEL CAMP- EVENING

TIM'S dream is at the head of a make shift desk.
Flanked on either side of the desk are 6 of his
OFFICERS.
Conversation in Burmese with English subtitles.
OFFICER #1
We will soon have the President and
his vice president in our hands.
OFFICER #2
We'll show the Burmese what the Shan,
and Karin people are capable of.
WIPE TO:
INT. CHAING MAI AIRPORT EVENING
PAR TEN
It would be best if we got
some rest. Let us get a taxi.
EXT. CHAING MAI STREET EVENING
PAR TEN and TIM are traveling in a tuk-tuk,
a open aired 3 wheeled Motorized Cab,
with their luggage on their knees.
EXT. CHAING MAI - TRAVELER HOTEL ESTABLISHING SHOT - NIGHT
PAR TEN and TIM pay the TUK-TUK DRIVER.
INT. CHAING MAI HOTEL ROOM NIGHT
PAR TEN and TIM enter a room with 2 beds.
ANGLE ON: Clock 9:00 PM
TIM flops down on a bed, PAR TEN does the same.
SEVERAL HOURS LATER
TIM awakens, sees that PAR TEN is still sleeping.
TIM leaves a note with the time.
INSERT NOTE: I am going for a walk be back in an hour.
EXT. CHANG MAI HOTEL NIGHT
ANGLE ON: WESTERNER talking with TALL THAI WOMAN
dressed as a prostitute.
TIM walks around the block, walking into
a noodle shop. He is enjoying the Chang Mai
atmosphere of northern Thailand.
INT. CHAING MAI NOODLE SHOP NIGHT
TIM takes a seat next to some shoesstring travelers.
OSEAN(23) and Philippe(23), from the Netherlands.
PHILIPPE
Hello, have a seat.
TIM
Thank you, long day.
OSEAN
Oh, yes. You have come from a trekking?
TIM
(smiling to himself)
Of sorts.
PHILIPPE
Really, we are gearing up for
6 day trek through the hill Tribes.
(a beat)
(lowering his voice)
Did you smoke opium on your trek?
TIM
No, I've been traveling from Burma to
Japan, I haven't been trekking in the
north here.
PHILIPPE
Japan, so cool, I'd like go to there.
OSEAN
Expensive no?
PHILIPPE
You have been to the beaches to the south?
TIM
I visited Thailand a year ago.
I was on Koh Samui, and Koh Phanagan
OSEAN
(smiling)
Full moon party on Koh Phanagan.
PHILIPPE
Is really a tripping fest?
TIM
You could say that.
OSEAN
What about Pat Pong road?
TIM
Strange place.
PHILIPPE
Really? Tell us about it.
TIM
You haven't been Bangkok?
(a beat)
Well, I don't know what you've heard
but it's all true. There's bars all
along Pat Pong road, some have a small
cover, some no cover.
PHILIPPE
(interrupting)
What cover? No, how you say? Roof?
TIM
No, no, cover means, cover charge,
cost to get in. Anyway you go in have a
drink and they have a sex show. Some
shows have a girl shooting darts with
their private parts to break balloons.
I saw this girl break 2 balloons, I
clapped. Then they blew a horn, smoked a
cigarette, it's pretty crazy.
PHILIPPE
Many prostitute?
TIM
I saw something written on a men's
wash room in Bangkok. Prostitution
is just creative masturbation.
OSEAN
You must careful He-She.
TIM
Who she?
PHILIPPE
He.
TIM
(indicating OSEAN)
Him?
OSEAN
Not me!
PHILIPPE
In Thailand, they have many boy
who dress like women.
TIM
Oh, I see, He–She.
(a beat)
I think I saw one just before.
OSEAN
(to PHILIPPE)
He met your girlfriend.
PHILIPPE
(to OSEAN)
Is your girlfriend.
The trio sit back.
OSEAN
Hey, you want a smoke a joint?
TIM
Sounds good, but I have to save my
strength, another long day ahead.
OSEAN
We been take testosterone, for our
strength. Food not so good on trekking.
You want some testosterone.
TIM
No, thank you.
PHILIPPE
What are you do if you are not go trekking?
TIM
I have to head back to Burma.
(a beat)
Save the country.
OSEAN
I hear war now there.
TIM
I believe so.
PHILIPPE
Better maybe to smoke, and go to trek.
TIM
Duty calls.
PHILIPPE
(to OSEAN)
What he say?
OSEAN
(to PHILIPPE)
He has must go toilet.
(a beat)
TIM
I best check on my friend.
It was nice to meet you.
Good luck with your trek.
OSEAN/PHILIPPE
Same on with you, your adventure.
Saving your country.
TIM
Thank you.
EXT. CHAING MAI STREET- NIGHT
TIM walks back to the hotel.
Out of the shadows comes the now recognizable
THAI HE-SHE who TIM had noticed earlier.
THAI HE-SHE
Hello blue eye. Out late tonight?
CUT TO:
INT. CHAING MAIL HOTEL ROOM NIGHT
PAR TEN wakes up as TIM enters.
PAR TEN
Couldn't sleep?
TIM
I slept some, I was hungry and
a little antsy. I left you a note.
PAR TEN
What is antsy? I'm not angry, but
we still need to finish our mission.
TIM
Agreed, I'm here.
PAR TEN turns toward a clock, it is 3:30 AM.
PAR TEN gets up and opens the curtains.
It is still dark outside.
PAR TEN
A couple more hours and we will
continue our journey.
TIM
OK, but how are we going
to get to Burma?
PAR TEN
Bus. Now sleep.
Obeying PAR TEN'S orders TIM lays down.
Closing his eyes TIM has another dream.
DREAM SEQUENCE:
INT. PAR TEN COMPOUND TREASURE ROOM NIGHT
TIM is in the PAR TEN treasure room surrounded by
the ancient sculptures and artworks. The Ying-Yang
Crystal stands complete in the center of the room.
Light emanates from the crystal. TIM hears the
opening of the door, turning he sees SUZUKI,
dressed as the NINJA sneaking into the room.
SUZUKI seems oblivious to TIM as he steals his
way across the room. SUZUKI reaches into his breast,
takes out a sack to steal the crystal.
TIM
Hey!! I see you!!
SUZUKI cannot hear TIM.
TIM takes a few steps toward SUZUKI but is stuck
immobile, he tries to speak again but cannot
make a sound. TIM watches helplessly as
SUZUKI makes off with the crystal.
END DREAM SEQUENCE:
TIM opens his eyes, he glances over to PAR TEN
who is re-assembling their gear.
EXT. CHAING MAI HOTEL ROOM FIRST LIGHT
PAR TEN and TIM board a tuk-tuk, the local
3 wheeled scooter.
PAR TEN
(to tuk-tuk DRIVER)
Bus station please.
MONTAGE:
A) Chaing Mai streets.
B) HE-SHE appears.
C) City starts to come awake.
D) MONKS/STREET SWEEPERS take the streets.
END MONTAGE:
PAR TEN
Look at the STREET SWEEPERS.
Notice anything?
TIM
Yes, they are all pretty women.
PAR TEN
Correct. Thailand has beautiful women.
TIM
I agree, but this is your first
trip here, and we haven't really
seen anyone at all.
PAR TEN
If the people working lower station
jobs are attractive, then everyone
in the country must be very attractive
TIM
Interesting hypotheses. But I've never
known you to comment on women before.
PAR TEN
Just helping to educate my young friend.
INT/EXT OPEN AIRED BUS STATION MORNING
PAR TEN is conversing in Thai with the TICKET SELLER.
TIM, seated watches on. PAR TEN, with tickets,
crosses to sit next to him.
PAR TEN
We'll take a bus that will take
us to the town of Pai. From there
smaller jeep transport that will
take us to the border. The first leg
of the journey will take about 4 hours,
It's about a wait 40 minutes for
the next bus.
TIM
OK, you hungry?
The clock strikes 7AM. The Thai National Anthem
blares through speakers at the Bus station.
Everyone in the place immediately stands.
Not knowing really what is going on PAR TEN and TIM are immediately drawn
to their feet for the duration of the instrumental anthem.
PAR TEN
(finally answering TIM'S question)
Yes, let's eat, while we have time.
INT. THAI OPEN AIR CAFÉ- MORNING
PAR TEN and TIM sit across from each other
with Thai ice teas.
TIM
The Thais seem more relaxed then
the Japanese. The Japanese were very
polite, but there was something I felt.
Like I could never really fit in. I have
never noticed it before, but the people
in Burma I think are as equally relaxed.
PAR TEN
I can see what you mean. Every man
feels more, or less at home in a
different place. It is the people
that make the country.
ANGLE ON: TRAVELER leaning casually on a stand up table
in the restaurant.
TIM
(noticing the TRAVELER)
Now, there is an American.
PAR TEN
How can you tell?
TIM
You can always spot an American. They
are always leaning on something.
PAR TEN
You have become quite observant Tim.
ANGLE ON: AMERICAN TRAVELER, PETER(25), looks as if he
has been on the road for a long time.
TIM catches his eye
TIM
(to AMERICAN TRAVELER)
Would you like to join us?
PETER
Hi, yes, thank you, how are you?
TIM
Good, good, I'm Tim, this is my
companion Par Ten.
PETER
Nice to meet you
(a beat)
Waiting for the bus?
TIM nods his head.
PETER
Where are you headed?
PAR TEN
Pai.
PETER
Oh, really? I've just came from
there, nice town. Good trekking.
(a beat)
Are you going trekking?
TIM
Yes.
PAR TEN
You're an American?
PETER
Yes.
PAR TEN
Tim, knew you were an American
by the way you stood.
PETER
I've noticed that different people of
different nations stand and walk
different also. Mostly in Asia people
walk from their knees.
PETER gets up and demonstrates.
PETER(CONT'D.)
But in the West, they walk from the hips.
(demonstrating)
PETER(CONT'D.)
Although the Thai's also walk from the
hips, maybe because they're so cool.
(a beat)
I've noticed a lot about different
peoples. The way people smoke for
example is also a clue to where they
are from.
(a beat)
The Chinese hold their cigarettes with
the burning end up, in 2 fingers so
as to slow the pace of the burning
tobacco. The German travelers I've
had met seemed always to be deep in
thought seemingly plotting their next
(MORE)
PETER(CONT'D.)
world conquest. Canadians seem to me like
the puppy dogs of the traveling world,
gung ho, guileless, and innocent.
PAR TEN and TIM let PETER ramble but
are genuinely interested.
PETER(CONT'D.)
You'll have to forgive me, I've just
come from Pai, but before that I was over
land from China, and haven't spoken English
in a while.
(a beat)
I met a traveler from New York one time
who had been living in Japan teaching
English. He had been traveling for
quite a while, with his base in Japan,
his name was Andrew. He had made a list,
a ranking of all the countries of
travelers that he had met and he
rated each nation in terms of
how cool the travelers were. Americans
and Japanese got a 4.5, Germans and
French he gave a 4, Canadians a 2.
He gave Australians a 3, Israelis a
3.5 he gave the Dutch a 5, he thought
the Dutch were like supermen for some
reason, he said they all spoke
the best English, and were all in
fantastic shape. Above the Dutch was
the cat, the cat got a 6 while the dog
got a 2, cats are cooler than dogs I guess.
For some reason Andy liked goats, he
gave the goat an 8.
PAR TEN
The goat?
PETER
I asked him about that?
He said, have you ever looked into
the eyes of a goat? They're
tripping all the time. That's what
he said.
PAR TEN
I think we should go back to
the bus station.
PETER
I should get back, too, is it
all right if I join you?
PAR TEN/ TIM
Of course.
THE TRIO divide up the bill.
INT/EXT OPEN AIRED BUS STATION MORING
PAR TEN and TIM shake hands with Peter.
PAR TEN and TIM board the bus bound for Pai.
The bus has seats that run along the length of the
bus as opposed to 2 rows of seats. More people
start to pack on. Just when there seems to be no
more room on the seat, a MIDDLE-AGED THAI WOMEN
with a bag of long stemmed green vegetables makes
room for herself. Bowing her head to TIM she uses
her hand as a divider between TIM and the person
seated next to him. Tuning around, she slides her
behind in between TIM and his NEIGHBOR.
REACTION SHOT: TIM turning to PAR TEN
PAR TEN smiles.
The bus starts to move. The road at first smooth,
turns bumpy quickly. A 2 year old SCREAMING CHILD
seems oblivious of everything but himself.
ANGLE ON: GRANDMOTHER holding SCREAMING CHILD on
her lap. After an uncontrolled bout of vomiting,
the SCREAMING CHILD mellows a few moments, then
starts screaming again.
The bus makes frequent stops. A young Thai BUS
ATTENDANT moves up and down the aisle collecting
fares. Passing the SCREAMING CHILD on his trips.
On one such trip the BUS ATTENDENT stops,
turns, then yells into the face of the SCREAMING
CHILD at the top of his lungs. The SCREAMING
CHILD is stunned into silence, he starts
to cry again.
ANGLE ON: TIM smiling.
The bus pulls over. The PASSENGERS disembark.
The WOMEN and the MEN separate to relieve themselves.
PEE SEQUENCE:
WOMEN line up on one side, facing the parked bus.
And as if on cue they all drop their pants
and squat. The men on the other side face
away from the road and proceed to pee. TIM, in the
middle has never seen a group of women urinate in
public and stares in disbelief.
PAR TEN looks over his shoulder at TIM.
TIM joins PAR TEN at the side of the road.
TIM
You know, if you look up it doesn't
look like your peeing.
TIM looks up.
TIM
Then, if you point it really looks
like you are just looking up.
TIM demonstrates his technique.
PAR TEN
This is very useful information.
WIPE:
INT. THAI BUS BOUND FOR PAI - DAY
TIM and PAR TEN sitting together, as the bus winds up a road to the city of
Pai.
CUT AWAY: Northern Thai country side
EXT. PAI BUS STOP DAY
TIM and PAR TEN get off the large bus.
The next ride for TIM and PAR TEN appears in the
form of a half full jeep. After a minute the dust
settles. The PASSENGERS are a TRIBESMAN and WOMAN.
A YOUNG COUPLE with two little DAUGHTERS have all
their belongings. DAUGHTERS wearing traditional
Hill Tribe clothing.
TIM and PAR TEN climb on board. Waiting for
the jeep to fill, TIM eyes his new travel
mates, as they eye him.
PAR TEN
The borders around the Golden
Triangle are more political than
geographical. Away from the coast
the terrain is mountainous, the Hill
tribes that live here are made up
of the ethnic Thai, Burmese,
and Chinese.
There is an OLDER WOMEN chewing beetle nut root rolling
her own tobacco.
OLDER WOMEN eyes TIM, vaguely curious. 2 teenaged
SCHOOL BOYS with well worn, but formal school
uniforms get into the jeep. As they jump in they
see TIM and are pleasantly surprised.
After some time they try their English on TIM.
SCHOOL BOY #1
Hello, what is your name?
TIM
Tim.
SCHOOL BOY #2
Where are you from?
TIM
I'm from New York.
The jeep starts to move.
SCHOOL BOY #1
Are you England?
(a beat)
TIM
(sarcastically)
Yeah,
(a beat)
I'm England.
ANGLE ON: PAR TEN shaking his head. This ride
is bumpier than the bus. The passengers seem
to enjoy the trip.
The OLDER THAI WOMEN offers TIM some
beetle nut, he declines, she smiles.
OLDER THAI WOMEN
(speaking Thai)
Where do you come from?
TIM
I don't understand Thai.
SCHOOL BOY #1
She ask you where come from.
TIM
(to OLDER THAI WOMEN)
TIM
New York.
OLDER THAI WOMEN
(speaking Thai)
Where do you go? Why you coming here?
TIM looks at the SCHOOL BOYS.
SCHOOL BOY #1
She want know why you here.
TIM
Please tell her I'm here to save
the world from some damage that
I have done.
EXT. SMALL VILLAGE- THAI/BURMESE BORDER –DAY
The jeep stops in Luang Prabong.
The PASSAENGERS make room for a NEW MOTHER on a
stretcher who has just given birth. NEW MOTHER
is lain prone in the back under thick blankets.
BABY with fresh blood on his head. rides up in
the front with a MIDWIFE.
MONTAGE:
A) OCCUPANTS turn over several times.
B) INDIGENOUS PEOPLE watching the jeep.
END MONTAGE:
EXT. ANOTHER SMALL TOWN JEEP DRIVING AFTERNOON
ANGLE ON: 2 LITTLE GIRLS in worn dresses,
sitting on their hunches at the side of the road.
LITTLE GIRL #1 grabs her friend points to TIM.
LITTLE GIRL #1
(in astonishment)
Soviet! Soviet!
TIM
(to PAR TEN)
Wow, I've never been mistaken for
a Russian before.
PAR TEN
We are going to have to make
you look Burmese to get you
across the border.
The sun starts to set. The temperature falls.
The PASSENGERS began to huddle for warmth.
A PRETTY KARIN GIRL snuggles up to TIM.
The jeep comes to a stop. The DRIVER gets out,
circles the vehicle. Searching the faces of the
passengers.
The DRIVER talks in a hushed voice to Par Ten.
PAR TEN hands the DRIVER a hundred dollar bill
The DRIVER gets into the front and resumes course.
TIM
What was that about?
PAR TEN
You owe me one hundred dollars.
TIM
I owe you a lot more than that,
but what was it for?
PAR TEN
We will be approaching the border
very soon. There will be Thai and
Burmese military on either side.
The Thais are more concerned with
refugees coming out of Burma, than
ones coming into country. This side
(MORE)
PAR TEN(CONT'D.)
of the border is not watched as closely.
Although the driver is confident that
the guards will take no notice to us,
he is taking a risk bringing a
Westerner into the country.
TIM
I have my passport and a working
visa, why should it matter?
PAR TEN
Even if there was no revolution,
this border crossing is only for
locals who trade daily between
hill towns, it is not an official
international crossing station,
and the driver has to pay the
warlords who control the area.
EXT. THAI/BURMESE BORDER NIGHT
The jeep slows at the border. It is very dark.
2 THAI CROSSING GUARDS check out The PASSENGERS.
TIM is nervous, but all the PASSENGERS are bundled up.
The CROSSING GUARD waves the jeep on.
On the Burmese side 2 BURMESE CROSSING GUARDS,
open the barricade, they wave the jeep through.
PAR TEN
I believe all will be better now.
INT. REBEL CAMP BURMESE WOODS NIGHT
COLNET the leader of the Miop Red Rebels is asleep.
ANGLE ON: COLNET'S face, he is fitfully
sleeping, dreaming.
DREAM SEQUENCE:
EXT. BUMESE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE DAY
COLNET is in his home town, wandering through a
recent battle. Dead and wounded civilians are
everywhere. COLNET approaches a teenage BOY.
The BOY sits up as COLNET comes closer.
COLNET
I know you.
ARIPA
I am Aripa, your best friend.
COLNET
You were shot and killed in a raid
ARIPA
Yes, but I am appearing to you in
the body of when we were young.
You must end the bloodshed, those
in power are willing to change.
There need not be any more violence.
COLNET
When peaceful means fail, violence is
the only other option, we learned this
together.
ARNET
Perhaps time has changed us both.
Can you feel that our country is now
different from when it was only a short
time ago, when the revolution began?
COLNET
I do feel a change, what am I to do?
ARNET
You must have a meeting with the
officials who are still in the
capitol. Make peace.
END DREAM SEQUENCE:
TIM and PAR TEN arrive in Rangoon, the capitol.
The city is no longer in a state of anarchy. There
are signs of democracy and free speech in the
form of posters and announcements of new political
elections.
INT. PAR TEN COMPOUND- TREASURE ROOM- DAY
The PAR TEN family treasures are intact.
ANGLE ON: Seat of the Yang Crystal, the display
is empty.
ANGLE ON: MUAY, he has aged 10 years. MUAY is with
another American teacher, RYAN(23).
MUAY
These are some treasures that
my family has collected over
the years.
RYAN
(noticing vacant display)

MUAY
That is a long story.
