WHY ARE WE FAT

FOOD REVOLUTION
PART I: INDUSTRIALIZATION OF FOOD
In the 1930âs the industrial revolution began the transformation of
America.
*B&W footage of factories with smoke stacks.
*B&W footage of Grand Central Station being built.
America once an oasis in the Atlantic Ocean, stumbled upon in the 15th
century by a young Portuguese explorer named Christopher Columbus has
changed.
*Satellite view of North America
*Conquistadors in tropics.
*Vast rolling green fields.
In 2 short decades this land, this land that was my land, this land that
was your land this land of opportunity for millions has been violently
propelled to the forefront of every industry known to man.
*Car plant assembly lines, Tool plant assembly lines, Garment sweat shop.
*High-speed footage building being built.
Transportation and construction, the manufacturing of our homes tools and
clothes. The industrial revolution has affected our society on every level.
*Iron construction workers on girders.
*American Indian watching people litter on the Freeway.
Have we made our lives too easy?
*Women in scooter at the Wal-Mart
The Pitfalls of industrialization, lack of exercise and the industrial
refinement of food have turned our nation obese.
*Man in scooter at the supermarket
In the 70âs exercise and a fitness craze swept the country.
*Spin classâs dissolve to Marathon runners crossing the Brooklyn Bridge.
*Male and female body builders posing on stage.
Exercise alone will not prevent the diseases caused by industrialization.
We must know what we are feeding ourselves, and our children.
*Animals being injected with steroids.
*Dusting of Crops
*Sewage water spilling out large pipe into bay.
The corporation, in its desire to control, and own everything has begun to
manufacture the building blocks of life itself. Our Food!!
*Money being pressed. B&W film of JP Getty.
*Executive yachts and homes.
Pure greed runs the food industry. Manufactures have traded the health of
the nation for profit.
Like all businesses the food industry runs on profits.
Reduced costs and shelf life equal more money.
*Supermarket allyâs, row after row of refined foods.
Without our knowing it we have been turned into a nation of sugar junkies.
*Halloween costumed children dump out their evening booty.
*Children drinking soda pop, eating candy.
Junkies that cannot get enough. Like any other addict, food junkies have a
source, a place to get their fix.
*Supermarket allyâs, row after row of refined foods.
*Food court of suburban mall
*Fast food restaurant, line of cars in drive through.
Americans and our children are gorging ourselves on foods and snacks not
only empty of nutrition but that are in fact harmful.
PART II: THE SCHOOL
*University of Boulder library etching:
äHe who knows only his own generation remains
always a childä
Our bodies are living machines that run on food.
*Bus loads of elementary students entering middle school.
*Middle school students on lunch line.
Foods in their natural state are perishable. Bacteria and other organism
are constantly on the hunt to satisfy their
own nutritional needs.
*High speed photography fruit spoiling
In order to prevent foods from spoiling and to make them more appealing to
the eye, cancer causing chemicals are introduced.
*Dusting of Crops
More than half of all chemicals used in foods are to make them appear more
homogeneous, giving them a uniform color size and taste.
*3 tall slim blonde women wearing identical clothes
enter a shopping mall.
*Orwellian clip from 1984 Macintosh commercial.
One look tells us that this is not healthy.
*SCIENTIST in lab coat, standing in front of chalkboard.
SCIENTIST
Now pay attention, this is important.
SCIENTIST
(Raising his voice, looking into the camera)
Hey you!! Yes you, this is important stuff.
2 minutes to save your life. What do you
think? Do you think you can do that? 2
minutes start now.
Diagram of berry on black board.
A wide variety of whole grains and real
breads are the building blocks of life.
Everything is a berry, when the seed is
broken the natural oils and fats which we
need to survive start to break down.
The food industry has taken these natural
elements out of the food to preserve shelf
life and lock in profits. When the natural
elements of the grain are removed the label
will say ãEnrichedä. Do not eat foods that
are enriched be it enriched white or wheat
bread. You must look for the word ãwholeä.
You got that?
*Flys not eating white flour.
Now, transfats. Hydrogenated oil of any kind
are linked with cancer. To preserve
shelf life and to lower their costs, the
food industry uses oils that were
manufactured in a laboratory to withstand
high heat. These oils cause cancer, and are
used to preserve moisture in the food and to
prevent foods from spoiling.
Last is sugar. Are you still paying
attention? Sugar contains no nutritional
value. It is a sweetener and a preservative,
used in the food industry to extend shelf life.
Sugar on the label is now often written as high
Fructose corn syrup, which is a highly refined
sugar, high in calories with no nutritional value.
*School children drinking pepsi.
*School lunch line.
*School lunch tray with pizza, hamburger milk.
What are we feeding our children?
*Interview school lunch lady.
*Interview dietician activist.
Lets go higher up the food chain, excuse the pun.
*Interview school principal.
*Interview obesity, dietician activist.
Why are these foods being served? Why is there no nutrition program in the
school to teach children what to eat?
*Interview school biology teacher.
*Interview obesity, dietician activist.
*Interview school board.
*Interview obesity, dietician activist.
*Interview local baker.
PART III: GRADUATION
Then our children grow.
*Morph of chubby child into obese adult.
*Man sitting on couch with remote control, soda and chips.
*Man sitting at desk in office
*Driving BMW on 405 hi-way.
*Lines of cars at fast food drive through.
The food industry is in bed with the fast food industry.
The consumer is out on the road, racing to get to work.
There is no place to eat, so the fast food company steps in
and takes advantage of the sugar junkie we created in high school.
Serving enriched breads with French fries made from transfats.
Sodas and shakes sweet with sugar and no nutritional value.
*People gorging themselves on fast food
Then you get home, stare into the television, where you are bombarded with
drug commercials claiming to cure the diseases youâve just contributed to.
*Supermarket allyâs, row after row of refined foods.
Sleek packaging and deceptive labeling trick the consumer into thinking
that they are getting nutritionally balanced food.
If it doesnât spoil, you shouldnât eat it.
What is in these sports bars that makes them not spoil?
It is sugar. Brown rice syrup, evaporated cane juice.
Sugar, that makes the product taste sweet, preserving shelf life.
PART III: WHAT CAN WE DO?
Without proper nutrition, our bodies cannot fight diseases brought on from
chemicals present in our
World. Chemicals from water, chemicals from pollution in the air, and
chemicals from processed foods.
*Elderly couple walking with portable Oxygen tank.
*Dusting of Crops
*Sewage water spilling out large pipe into bay.
*Smog of Los Angeles. Line of cars on 405 hi-way.
We over eat because there is no nutritional value
in the things that we do eat, only exacerbating
the problem. Vitamins and minerals that cause your cells to replicate
properly cause your glands to function normally.
We need proper nutrition for elasticity of blood vessels, density of bones
and tendons, nail and skin vitality.
Prostate performance, mental clarity, proper digestion, just to name a few.
*Assembly line of drugs going into bottles.
Our society is turning increasingly toward drugs to balance out the
problems of poor nutrition. The answer to long life is proper diet and
exercise, not miracles costing an arm and a leg that were manufactured in a
laboratory.
Our children are our future.
The time is now to make plan the facts about nutrition and exercise to the
next generation, we cannot lie to them any more.
*Parents waiting to pick up children after school.
We cannot stand idly by while they are not educated properly.
The consumer has the power. We do not realize the power that we have.
Companies make products because we buy them.
*Obese people at shopping mall
We can force companies to make foods that contain the ingredients that we
need to live better lives by simply buying the proper foods. The consumer
is more powerful than any company that ever existed. The company cannot
survive with out the consumer. If we stopped buying foods that were
enriched, foods that contained hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn
syrup, the food companies would change their ingredients, or go out of
business. Itâs as simple as that.
*European nation where children are biking to school.
Did you know that some cities do not allow their children to bike to school?
What is the leading cause of death in our country?
40,000 people a year are killed in automobile accidents
The automobile is one of the main culprits in our fight against pollution,
obesity and war.
*Images of war in Iraq
*OPEC meeting
Awareness is the key. Just because you are in a store that claims to have
organic produce, you still must read the label.
Every time you look in the mirror, realize that there is something you can
do to live longer. Every time you eat out, realize that if you care about
yourself, take a moment to know what you are eating, be healthy and be wise.
